Fertő-Hanság National Park Directorate (FHNPD)
Fertő-Hanság National Park Directorate (FHNPD) was established in 1991 and is responsible for the protected areas of the northwest part of Hungary including a national park, 3 landscape protection areas, 15 Natura 2000 sites – altogether 46,000 ha nationally protected areas including 4,000 ha owned by the state and managed by the national park directorate and Lake Fertő, the westernmost continental steppe lake that was declared a World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site in 2002. Lake Fertő and the swamps of Hanság have a rich fauna; beside that great bustard, red-footed falcon and other raptors populate the Moson-plain. The main tasks of FHNPD are the conservation of protected natural values by site management and species conservation, research and nature conservation education. It has a highly educated, experienced and committed staff, as well as the necessary equipment, livestock and education center. FHNPD has identified 81,000 ha Natura 2000 sites in the region.
FHNPD has gained experience in the field of grassland restoration in the interest of endangered species during numerous past projects, among them LIFE07 NAT/H/000322, LIFE08 NAT/H/000289, LIFE13 NAT/HU/000183. In the latter, the creation of fallow land was addressed for the first time and proved to be a successful measure for creating suitable habitats for endangered species within ploughlands.
