Did you know that the heaviest European flying bird species lives in Slovakia? We talk about the great bustard.
After the iconic species of the European lowlands and the king of steppes – the great bustard, the rare red-footed falcon prospers in Slovakia too. Although a decade ago there was not a single pair nesting in Slovakia, during the last summer the environmentalists counted 20 pairs and 46 chicks.
During the last summer, a seasonal educational trail going across the Sysľovské polia SPA was opened for the first time.
It was once a common resident of lowlands. In 1900, there were 2400 individuals living in Slovakia, after the Second World War there was more than a thousand of them, but today it nests only in the last locality in Slovakia and thus it belongs to our most endangered bird species.
